We've tried the clam chowder at every place we've been that serves it - over 25 places in Utah. These are our Top 10:
1. Lion House, Salt Lake City. A
2. Eating Establishment, Park City. A
3. Cafe 300, in Provo. Plenty of clams. Clam chowder is served only Friday nights (the only night they also serve the best fish and chips in Utah.). A
4. Mimi's Cafe, national chain. A-
5. Sea Bears, Ogden A-
3. Cafe 300, in Provo. Plenty of clams. Clam chowder is served only Friday nights (the only night they also serve the best fish and chips in Utah.). A
4. Mimi's Cafe, national chain. A-
5. Sea Bears, Ogden A-
6. Great Steak Sandwich Co. on Geneva Road and Center St., Provo. Surprisingly good chowder for a classic dive - and the atmosphere is actually warm and friendly. B+
7. Sommerhays. SLC. Grade: B+
8. Steven's Restaurant, Midway. Smokey flavor brings the grade down. B/B+
10. Brickoven (canned flavor, unfortunately, but still good) B/B+
Down the list, we are not including the weak ones, except for two that we saved notes on:
11. Current (herbs too strong) B
12. Zupas, Provo. It's texture rates an A, but some weird herb draws the flavor down to a B-. Still, it's decent.
13. Christopher's Steak House in Draper and downtown Salt Lake - also ain't bad. B-
14. Shirley's Bakery Cafe C+/B-
15. Slapfish C+
16. Skippers C
Historical notes for you local foodie history buffs: two other places that had great chowder are no longer alive. The first in alphabetical order is:
1) Munchie's BBQ Provo, at 100 south Freedom Blvd., where chowder was king and served only on Fridays. The place lived only in 2011, and closed at year's end. (It also had the state's best brisket at the time and mac and cheese.) The 2nd was:
2) Piccadilly's Fish and Chips in Provo, then SLC in the 70's and, tho the fish was never great, the clam chowder was. But the place is still in business, right? Right, but that original recipe chowder took a left turn into the Twilight Zone. I later met the original owner, and he said that after he sold out, the later owners changed his wife's prized clam chowder recipe, and the new stuff went downhill so fast that it crashed like a hard drive. I remember the old stuff well, and agree with him.
