Best Bread in Utah

Best Breads in Utah
-- Revised 24 July 2016

Check out our OTHER FOOD REVIEWS at TasterTestersClub.BlogSpot.com

Let's qualify this - the best STORE-BOUGHT breads.  Some bakeries likely have great breads as well.  But most consumers don't have easy access to them, yet they can easily get all those listed below.

As bread lovers, we tested in several categories - whole wheat, whole wheat light (part whole wheat, part white flour, sometimes called "cracked wheat" bread), white bread (including sourdough), potato flour bread, rye, and black bread.

Until we tabulate results for them all, we will present only the winners for whole wheat and whole wheat light combined.  The Top 12 were chosen by adults and teens, from over 50 brands and varieties of whole and light whole wheat breads.

Top 6 Multi-grain breads (in order)
Note: for toast, the order is the same, except #5 below.
1. Alpine Valley, 12 grain and Omega - at Real Foods, several stores in Utah, trucked in frozen from CA on Saturdays
2. Kneadin' 12 grain, at Macey's, Provo
3. Kneadin 7 grain
4. Prairie Grain Ultimate grains and seeds, at most stores
5. Aspen 9 grain (last on this list of 6 for toast)
6. Prairie Grain Crunch Bread 9 grain

Top 2 half wheat/half white bread
1. Aspen Mills
2. Great Harvdest Cracked Wheat (better than Aspen Mills above for toast)

Top 6 Whole Wheat breads of the 50+ tested (in order)

1. Prairie Grain Honey Golden Honey Whole Wheat (at many markets, including Smiths) (rates #1 for toast as well).
2. Aspen Mills Honey Whole Wheat
3. Great Harvest Honey Whole Wheat
4. Prairie Grain Whole Wheat (big drop off from their one above, in taste, as it uses both honey and raisen syrup as the sweetener, which doesn't cut it)
5. Kneadin Bread (used to be #1; they did something to alter the taste - different wheat perhaps, or different recipe)
6. Sara Lee (best texture for sandwiches, for kids - as it is soft)

Noteworthy:
a. n/a
b. Grandma Sycamore Honey Whole Wheat - softer than most but a strong wheat taste) (at nearly all markets)
c. Oroweat Dutch Country 100% Whole Wheat (at many markets)
d. Oroweat Whole Grain 100% Whole Wheat (at most markets)
e. Prairie Grain Whole Wheat (not honey)

g. Sarah Lee Hearty and Delicious 100% whole wheat (and all their other whole wheat varieties) (at nearly all markets)
h. Nana's Love Whole Wheat (at Win-co)

Note that for optimum freshness, great texture, and highest flavor, 3 of the top varieties need to be eaten as soon as possible after purchase - they have no preservatives:  Great Harvest, Aspen Mills, and Prairie Grain.
