Best Pizza in Utah

Best Pizza in Utah (testing mainly Margharita pizza! - the original and best!)

Introductory notes

Our fav is Margharita style - mozz cheese, basil, and tomatos. We've also tested various combinations that also include garlic, oregano, parm cheese, asiago cheese, cheese blends, and olive oil. We've hit nearly every place in Utah County and a half dozen in Salt Lake County - the more upper scale places especially - that have wood-fired pizzas and brick oven pizzas.

This test is based primarily on Margharita Pizzas - a very basic pizza unknown to many that best allows us to test for crust, cheese, and marinara sauce, all in one fell swoop, but, unlike regular cheese pizza, this one ALSO has tomatoes and basil and on occasion garlic and and olive oil to add tons of interest.  (If you have kids, you might introduce it to them - most have never tried it and most will like it better than the standard for kids - cheese pizza!) 

Margharita Pizza 
The A's and B+'s:
1. Delicatta Pizza (formerly Tera Mia, Draper, Orem (CRUCIAL: ASK FOR quadruple amount of fresh BASIL LEAVES (in fact do that everywhere!, add cherry tomatoes (costs $1.50 extra), olive oil, and garlic powder.) Their cheese here is fabulous! A
2. Pizzaria 712, Orem A
3. Blaze, International chain (get the modified "Red Vine," a modified margharita) (ASK FOR TRIPLE FRESH BASIL LEAVES, olive oil, garlic dices (not whole roasted!), double the ovalini mozzarella, delete the parm cheese! Get it with the standard amount of red sauce. (Crust alone is among the best here B++). Total grade: A-
4. Settabello, Farmington, SLC A-
5. Pizza Limone, Salt Lake Valley, St. George, Lehi. NOTE: They have 2 Margharita pizzas - one very good, the other just OK. Order it with the same ingredients as Blaze Pizza above (and decline the 5 cheese blend). They don't have ovalini mozz, so get the fresh parm cheese!  A-
a. "Margharita Napoli" is their much better version. (Ask for extra amount of fresh mozz cheese and extra basil. LEAVE OFF THE PARM cheese - that's too strong for mild cheese lovers. The great marinara sauce shines through, the pizza having no tomatoes and needing no tomatoes on this. Terrific crust here. For an extra treat, try adding two other items: red onion and portabella mushroom slices. Few if any other places have portabella, so don't get mushroom on margharita elsewhere.) B++
b. "Margharita" is not so good, down the list below). 
6. Rico's in Provo. It has very nice chunky tomato sauce, the one called Margharita; another one there is similar with sliced tomatoes instead and a regular red sauce - not as goood. Order with double fresh basil! B++
7. Mod, chain shop including American Fork. It's called, "James Dillon" or some such, and does have a milder garlic added to it. LEAVE OFF THE ASIAGO CHEESE - WAY TOO STRONG FOR MARGHARITA. B++
8. Village Baker, local chain, including Lehi. They do everything wrong for a margharita, but it tastes great. So they don't call it a margharita - they call it something else. What's un-traditional margharita about it? diced tomatoes, 3 cheese blend (very good!), crust is too thick (but very good!). LEAVE OFF THE FETA - WAY TOO STRONG FOR MARGHARITA. B+

11. Lucy's New York, Orem and 3 in Idaho B

17. Summit Inn Pizza, Lehi (the crust rates a C-, but everything else is OK. Overall: B
18. Pizza Studio, Lehi (too strong charcoal flavor). B
19. Pizzaria Limone "Margharita" (see note above; they do have a better one on above list!). It's not normal margharita: instead of fresh mozz it has a 5 cheese blend - not a great flavor and just a bit too strong in flavor compared to ultra-mild mozz that we prefer or 3 cheese blend at Village Baker. Has red onions, juicy grape tomatoes, but no marinara sauce - a mistake!. Get the sister "Napoli" version above! B
20. Pieology, Lehi (weak crust) B
21. New York Pizza Patrol, Draper B-/B
22. Rusted Sun, SLC B-
23. Summit Inn, Lehi B-
24. Hopper's Grill and Brewery, Midvale B-
25. Medici, Orem (sourdough crust a bit chewy; overall flavor decent but not as good as the above margharitas) crust B+; margharita pizza as is B-, with garlic added B/B+, with garlic and oregano added B+
(Note: their margharita proscuta is lowered in taste, in our opinion, by having arugala and proscuta added to it: C+)
26. Antonella's, Orem B- (but their sandwiches and desserts are very good!)
27. La Dolce Vita (thick crust and C- sauce) B - -

29. Main St. Pizza, Provo (sauce too strong) C+
30. Carrabbas (too sharp of cheese sprinkled atop). 2 tests: first: B- -, second: C

1.  Pizzeria 712, on North State St., Orem. Why the number 712?  It's supposedly the perfect temperature at which to cook pizza.  
1a. Margharita gets an A. 
They also have other fab pizzas that are surprisingly great.  Tied with margharita is:

2.  Settlebello 260 S 200 W Salt Lake City.  Per above, Margharita gets an A

3. NYPD Pizza, in Draper and SLC (OUT OF BUSINESS BUT REPLACED WITH SIMILAR MENU AT NEW YORK PIZZA PATROL AND SAME INGREDIENTS FOR ITEMS THEY KEPT)
a. Margharita gets an A-. 
b. While you're there, check out the amazing Wedding Soup (couscous, basil, meatballs) grade A.

6. Nicolitaliano, University Parkway, Provo. ONLY FOR Margharita. which gets a B++ (5th best - which is very good) but overall the pizza here ranks 11th in our tests. The Margharita is different here than anywhere else - they add other seasonings and herbs.

7-8 N/a

9. Rusted Sun, SLC. 2100 South, Salt Lake City.  Not wood fired but great pizza.  One of the best places in town for pizzas. B++ in general. Certainly better than all the chain pizzas.

10.  Slab, 800 North, about 667 East, Provo (Not wood-fired.)  Margharita:  B.  Here are their best ones however:  Real Hawaiian, with spam - our fav there - Grade: A-.  Next best:  Chile Verde Pizza: B++, New Mexico with red sauce: B+, Thai chicken: B+, and White Pizza: B+.  Rosmary potato and bacon: B, Sausage, pepper, and 3 veges: B.  We tested all their pizzas.  Those listed were the best. More details:

14.  Brick Oven, 800 North, 100 East, Provo.  Maybe deserving a spot in the Top 10, this has become an institution.  Many couples had their first dates there even back in the 50's.  No wood-fired oven, not even a brick oven anymore since renovations years ago, but for regular pizza, it's better than most, and beats the national chains to smithereens.
